Meet Mayor G
Mayor Gierisch is a lifelong resident of Roanoke, born and raised in the community he deeply cherishes. His commitment to serving the community where he grew up is a driving force in his life. He and his wife, who were married in 1987, have raised their two children in Roanoke. His journey in public service began when he was invited by then-Mayor John "Toots" Tidwell to serve as Chairman of the Zoning Board of Adjustments. This role provided him with valuable insights into city government. In 1995, Mayor Gierisch made a successful bid for the Roanoke City Council, further deepening his understanding and service to the community. Encouraged by the citizens, he ran for mayor in 2005 and was elected. Having now served seven terms as mayor, he continues to dedicate himself to the positive growth of the city and humbly seeks re-election to maintain this momentum.

WORKING FOR YOU
Roanoke City's governance is structured through a Ward System, featuring three wards, each represented by two city council members. The mayor is elected at large, engaging the entire voting citizenry in the selection process.
Over the past 26 years, Roanoke has consistently maintained one of the lowest property tax rates. Demonstrating our commitment to fostering a distinct hometown ambiance, we have successfully lowered property taxes to .34/100 in 2022 and further to .308/100 in 2023.
Innovatively addressing public safety concerns, we introduced the Community Crime Prevention District (CCPD), utilizing 1/2¢ sales tax to bolster police salaries and acquire essential equipment. This strategic move ensures that 50% of the city budget is allocated to public safety, with 30% dedicated to the police force and 20% to the fire department.
Our dedication to prudent fiscal management is evident in the reduction of the police portion in the city budget to approximately 22%, accomplished through strategic planning and diligent financial oversight. We continually seek efficiencies to benefit our citizens by trimming budgetary items without compromising essential services.
Strategic planning has been a cornerstone of our governance, exemplified by the completion of our recent plan without resorting to tax hikes. This success has enabled us to build new civic assets such as a library, fire department, skate park, and city hall. Our ongoing 2022 strategic plan has already delivered improvements, including shade structures, revamped splash pads, turf additions to soccer fields, and enhanced park amenities.
The city's economic development efforts, funded by a 1/2¢ sales tax, have empowered small businesses through matching grants. Since 2009, our Small Business Grant Program has provided over 60 grants, valued at nearly $300,000, supporting façade upgrades and fostering the growth of local enterprises.
In summary, Roanoke stands as a testament to responsible governance, featuring lowered property taxes, meticulous planning, expanded facilities without tax increases, innovative public safety funding through CCPD, and sustained support for small businesses through strategic grant initiatives. Choose a leader committed to progress – choose Roanoke.
